I should be doing loci now, but i'm taking a break.
Truth is, I'm really really tired - both mentally and physically. Every day seems like a terrible drag and just insignificant parts of a featureless, bleak plain. Life in RV is strange and convulted - on one hand we're labeling ourselves as a value-add school, but on the other hand (to quote Dr Kaku) "crushing every flower of curiosity and wonder" in our students. I just find it sad sometimes, seeing people treat ignorance as their natural state, losing the drive to learn and passion for change that we saw when they were younger, and just generally live their lives, uninterested and directionless. Into my last year of RV, I realise that I am disillusioned and not really sure why I'm still here for. It's just sad and depressing. Though I'm still reasonably proficient (I hope) in GP and Physics, I'm way behind in the subjects of Chemistry and Mathematics. Interest does not exist for Chemistry, largely due to me not seeing how it can actually be applied in the future and visualize it working in the real world. It's not really the fault of the teachers, but I feel it is more of that of the syllabus. It fails to emphasise what that really matters - application. While it is true that proficient application may not be conducted without adequate foundations (which happen to be built up by drilling). The thing about Chemistry is that it does not seem to have an end point. In Physics, I am sure that at the end of the course, I will have a better understanding of the world around and how it works, able to calculate, estimate and predict quantities, values and outcomes, throw me a physical scenario, and I would be able to break it down and explain it, predicting the outcome. It gives one an intuitive sense of the immediate environment. Geography does something similar too, by enabling you to co-relate different elements of the world around us, understanding how things affect each other across the boundaries of space and time. It gives one a sense of the world. Maths is another case altogether - primarily seen as existing purely just as a necessary evil for the efficient conduct of Physics. Chemistry in this case stands out sorely as the elephant in the room. Frustratingly.
He in any case, wants to be an architect. This is partially motivated by awkward school designs and more motivated by the belief that design has the potential to make a better world. In order to achieve the above goal, he wishes to study at the following institutions - MIT, SUTD or NUS. Since the MIT dream is mostly busted due to abysmal results, it is imperative for him to achieve the following in order to have a reasonable chance of getting into SUTD
- Get good grades for A' Levels.
- Be reasonably good at sketching/drawing
- Get a good writeup
- Bulk up portfolio
It is not going to be easy, especially the first and the third. But it has to be done. March holidays are coming up, lasting from coming Friday to following Sunday. I will use Friday to rest - perhaps I'll catch a movie. Saturday and Sunday will be spent most likely at UG camp, though at least 2 blocks of 2 hours must be dedicated to study daily. There will be a maximum of two hours in between each study session, and each study day must be preceded by at least 8 hours of sleep. The same sleep policy applies to weekdays during the March Holidays - though time must also be dedicated to physical training. Plans will be detailed later today, pre-holiday.
For now, it is important to persue work. In order of importance, I have :
1) Loci Tutorial (do at least 3 questions)
1) Complex Numbers 2 Assignment (do all)
2) GP Introduction Writing (Must get question either from Joon Teen, YuJie, or Ms Goh tomorrow morning)
3) Geography Tutorial (tutorial 9? or the population bomb question?)
4) Chemistry Reaction Kinetics Tutorial (Slightly ahead of the curve, but not enough. Have to do 3 Questions more)
